Zeynep obtained her Bachelor’s degree in Chemistry at Boğaziçi University (Turkey) in 2017. During her studies, she did a research internship in the group of Prof. J. G. Roelfes at the University of Groningen, where she worked in the synthesis of a photocleavable linker to be attached to an artificially responsive membrane channel. After she graduated, she returned to the University of Groningen to obtain her Master’s Degree in Chemistry. During her master’s, she joined the group of Dr. Marthe Walvoort to do her MSc research project. Her project focused on studying the method of metabolic oligosaccharide engineering for hijacking bacterial glycoprotein synthesis machinery; to enable the introduction of a chemical tag on bacterial adhesins. She then did an internship in the group of Dr. Martin Fascione at the University of York, UK, where she worked on the synthesis of poly-N-acetyl glucosamine derivatives using an automated glycan synthesizer, the Glyconeer. In 2020, she was awarded a PhD Scholarship at the University of Groningen to work on an interdisciplinary project in the groups of Dr. Marthe Walvoort and Prof. Dr. Dirk-Jan Scheffers. Her project will focus on interrupting the biosynthesis of lipopolysaccharides using metabolic oligosaccharide engineering and disrupting membrane integrity to target Gram-negative bacteria.
