Elisa was born in Hamm, Germany in 1996. She completed her BSc degree in Life Science & Technology in 2019 at the University of Groningen. During her bachelor’s research, she joined the virology department at the University Medical Center Groningen (UMCG), where she investigated the engagement of TLR2 by Dengue virus in the group of Prof. Dr. A.L.W. Huckriede.
She continued her academic journey with a Master’s degree in Chemistry at the University of Groningen. For her first research project, she worked in the group of Prof. Dr. M.T.C. Walvoort on the development of novel L-fucose donors for transglycosylation. Her second research project took place at Regenity Groningen (formerly Polyganics), where she completed an industrial internship focused on optimizing the synthesis of 3-block polyurethanes. Following the internship, she continued working part-time at the company for one year.
Elisa obtained her MSc in 2023 and re-joined the Stratingh Institute that same year as a PhD student in the Walvoort group. Her current research focuses on developing chemical tools to study bacterial adhesion glycosylation, with a particular emphasis on the synthesis of sugar nucleotide derivatives.
